The Task Force for a Safe School (TFSS) is a group of concerned P.S. 163 parents working with the support of our PTA to protect the children, teachers and staff of our school. We believe the proposed construction of a 20-story facility directly adjacent to our low structure and outdoor spaces may endanger health and safety as well as the quiet learning environment our children now enjoy.
The fight to protect NYC school children continues: P.S. 163 has gained another impactful victory in its fight to keep students and staff at our school safe. On May 2, the NY State Appellate Division granted our motion for permission to have our case decided by the Court of Appeals, New York State's highest court. Because preparations for such appeals cases typically take 6 months to more than a year, we believe it is now highly unlikely construction will start until the appeal is decided at the earliest.
The latest: On August 9, 2017, P.S. 163 filed its brief with New York State's high court, arguing why the Department of Health's failure to mitigate harms at our school should result in a redo of its environmental review of the proposed construction project. The court is expected to hear the case within the next six months.
