The Task Force for a Safe School (TFSS) is a group of concerned P.S. 163 parents working with the support of our PTA to protect the children, teachers and staff of our school. We believe the proposed construction of a 20-story facility directly adjacent to our low structure and outdoor spaces may endanger health and safety as well as the quiet learning environment our children now enjoy.
P.S. 163 Families WIN: On December 9, 2015, a New York State Court Judge ruled in favor of P.S.163's legal argument for the protection of the children at our school. In the words of Council Member Mark Levine, "This ruling marks a victory in the push to protect the students of PS 163. I am grateful for the tireless work of the parents of PS 163 and the surrounding community as our fight continues."
The fight to protect NYC school children continues: As expected, Jewish Home Lifecare (JHL) appealled Judge Joan Lobis's decision. Our response brief, and that of the residents of Park West Village, a residential complex also adjacent to the proposed JHL construction site, were filed on March 23, 2016 and are available here for your review. We believe these documents clearly spell out why the Judge's ruling should stand in favor of protecting the nearly 600 vulnerable school children of P.S. 163 as well as nearby residents. The New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division heard the case on May 24, 2016 and we await their ruling.
More Work To Do: TFSS will continue to fight for the protection of all NYC school children in the legislative arena. Intro 420 is a bill that would place strict limits on the noise impact on students in their classrooms. The bill is quickly picking up momentum and has garnered 25 co-sponsors in the City Council. Please join our our effort to ensure passage as part of the Coalition of Safe Schools in NYC.
