Against the grim backdrop of escalating pedestrian deaths at intersections close to P.S. 163, JHL's proposed construction of a towering nursing care facility directly adjacent to our school on West 97th Street is set to heighten the dangers to families and staff as they come to and leave school each day.
We are heartened that Council Member Helen Rosenthal and Community Board 7 are addressing one aspect of these dangers by hosting a public meeting on redesigning traffic along West End Avenue, a major north-south traffic corridor just a few blocks from P.S. 163. The objective of this meeting is to get public input to the Department of Transportation on reducing speeding, creating safer, simpler turns and pedestrians crossings, and improving street safety for all users.
Please turn out for this forum and express your concern about how JHL's proposed construction project would add a steady stream of massive construction vehicles, delivery trucks, staff and visitor vehicles and emergency care vehicles to the already congested and hazardous thoroughfare of West 97th Street. This cross street is already designated as an emergency vehicle route and has many first responder vehicles speed down it every day. West 97th Street intersects with West End Avenue just three blocks from our school and, earlier this year, was the site of a fatal traffic accident that needlessly cost a 9-year-old child his life.
Where: P.S. 811, Micky Mantle School, 466 West End Ave
When: Thursday, July 31, 6:30 p.m.
